COMMUNITY PROJECTS
A new year of giving and receiving is about to begin as the Guild offers our labors of love to groups and individuals within our community.
The Community Projects Committee will again be collecting similar projects as last year plus a few new ones. The pillow cases, Cancer Comfort Quilts, Baby Quilts, Fidgit Quilts, Receiving Blankets, Burp Cloths and Valor Quilts will continue to be collected. This gives you a choice of projects for you to work on. Please pick up a handout at the Community Projects Table with all the sizes and descriptions of each project.
Thank you for your help ahead of time in this new ‘giving’ year.
Children without Beds’ Quilts - approx. “70 X 90”
These special quilts will be going to children in our community who have no beds. Nancy Stone is the go-to person for this unit project. She works with an organization which does the coordination with the parents of each child. Along with the quilts they will receive a bed frame kit, mattress, sheet set, fleece blanket, Teddy Bear, and book from other sources. The ages of the children are 4-17 years old. Bright colors are usually the best choice.
Pillow Cases – approx., body cut 27’ X 42”, cuff 10” X 42”, accent stripe 3” X 42”.
Several methods are available to sew the pillowcase pieces together. A direction sheet is available at the Community Projects Table. The seams should all be enclosed so that there is NO raveling when washed. There are usually some cut kits ready to be sewn available at the Community Projects table. When finished they will be given to several local organizations..
Valor Quilts – approx. 70” X 90”
Finished in Red/White/Blue, they go to veterans whose families have made a request. Quilts are distributed as they become available.
Baby Quilts – approx. 40” X 40” up to 40” X 60”.
This is a spring project. Quilts be given to local hospitals.
Cancer ‘Comfort’ Quilts – approx. 40” X 60”.
LaDonna Marshall is our person who distributes these and the baby quilts above. The quilts are given to persons who are receiving treatment at the Cancer Center here in town. The smaller size works better for wheelchairs.
Nursing Home ‘Comfort’ Quilts – approx. 40” X 60”
These comfort quilts provide to persons who sit for hours in their wheelchairs. One of our members suggested adding a patch pocket, such as embroidery from old Tea towels or fancy handkerchiefs. Ideas are up to each creator.
Receiving Blankets – approx. 40” X 40” and Burp cloths – any size
These will be made from the large donation of flannel material we received in June. Several organizations are being considered to receive the ones that are completed.
Breast Pads – pattern will be at the Community Projects Table
These are made from flannel and are used following surgery. Terri Hoffacker is our go to person for this project and can answer additional questions and needs.
Large Bibs
Bibs will be given to nursing homes and residents in Downs Syndrome housing. Contact Aleta Betty for a pattern and numbers needed.
Fidget Quilts – 20” X 20” up 24” X 24”
These small lap-size pieces are for persons with dementia to help occupy their thoughts and hands. You can add multiple objects like soft or/and ‘fun’ fabric, tabs, pockets, buttons, lace, door flaps, etc. All objects need to be sewn on very securely. A backing of corduroy or other nonslip fabric will help them stay on their lap. They should be finished with batting and binding to make them very durable. Extra quilting on top helps also. They will be taken to local nursing homes.

They are simple to make:
- They should be between 20 and 24” square.
- They should not be pretty as this will encourage the patients to hide and not use them.
- The items you attach should be sewn on, sturdy, and washable.
- The back of the quilt should be a non-slippery fabric so it doesn’t fall off their lap. Corduroy, Fleece, and Flannel are good choices.
- Some items to attach are Velcro, pocket flaps with a little surprise underneath, an empty spool threaded on a piece of elastic, pieces of lace, a button(s) threaded on a piece of ribbon. Just make sure all items are securely attached and washable.
If you need more ideas, just Google “Fidget Quilts” and you will find lots of information. Have fun and be creative. Please bring your finished pieces to the Community Projects table, and we will make sure they get distributed.
