COMMUNITY PROJECTS

Revision Date: July 29, 2026
Community Projects Chairs: Deb Brown and Debbie Hanchett

A new year of giving is about to begin as Guild members share their talents and labors of love with individuals and organizations throughout our community. Thank you in advance for supporting these meaningful projects.
The Community Projects Committee accepts a variety of handmade items, giving every Guild member an opportunity to choose a project that matches their interests and skills.

Bring completed projects to any Guild meeting and leave them at the Community Projects table. Donations are accepted throughout the year unless otherwise noted.

Bed Blitz Quilts

Approximate size: 70" × 90"
These quilts are distributed through the West Bloomington Revitalization Project to children in our community who do not have beds. Recipients range in age from 4 to 17. Age- and gender-neutral designs are preferred.

Pillowcases

Suggested fabric cuts:
  • Body: 27" × 42"
  • Cuff: 10" × 42"
  • Accent strip: 3" × 42"
All seams must be enclosed to prevent raveling when washed.
Pillowcases may be donated to organizations including the Bloomington Housing Authority, McLean County Nursing Home, Cunningham Children’s Home, The Baby Fold, and Salem4Youth Ranch in Flanagan.

Quilts of Valor

Approximate size: 70" × 90"
Quilts of Valor are specially made quilts awarded to service members and veterans who have been affected by war. Because quilts must meet specific requirements for size, materials, labeling, and presentation, members should review the official guidelines before beginning a project.

Baby Quilts

Approximate size: 40" × 40" to 40" × 60"
Baby quilts may be featured as a spring project, but donations are accepted throughout the year. Quilts will be provided to The Baby Fold and other organizations as requested.

Cancer Comfort Quilts

Approximate size: 40" × 60"
These quilts are given to individuals receiving cancer treatment. The smaller size works well for wheelchair use.

Nursing Home Comfort Quilts

Approximate size: 40" × 60"
These quilts are provided to individuals who spend extended periods in wheelchairs. Members may add a pocket or other useful features at their discretion.

Receiving Blankets and Burp Cloths

  • Receiving blankets: approximately 40" × 40"
  • Burp cloths: any practical size
Several community organizations are being considered as recipients.

Breast Pads

Breast pads should be made from flannel and will be provided to individuals for use following breast surgery.

Adult Bibs

Adult bibs should be made from flannel and will be provided to residents of local housing programs serving individuals with Down syndrome.

Fidget Quilt Mats

Fidget quilts are simple to make and provide comfort and activity for individuals with dementia or other cognitive needs.
Quilts should measure approximately 20 to 24 inches square. Use practical, durable fabrics rather than especially decorative materials, since recipients may be more likely to use them regularly.
All attached items must be:
  • Sewn securely in place
  • Sturdy and washable
  • Safe for frequent handling
Use a nonslip fabric on the back so the quilt stays securely on the recipient’s lap. Corduroy, fleece, and flannel are good choices.
Possible items to include are Velcro, pocket flaps with a small surprise underneath, an empty spool threaded onto elastic, pieces of lace, or buttons secured to ribbon. Be sure every item is firmly attached and washable.
Have fun and be creative!
Completed mats will be distributed to local nursing homes.

Marble Mazes

  • Marble mazes are made from two pieces of flannel with a marble securely enclosed inside.
  • The design is up to the maker, but the pathways must be wide enough for the marble to move freely.
Marble mazes may be donated to YouthBuild, The Baby Fold, OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, local schools serving students with special needs, and other organizations as requested.
